Position Description

We are seeking to add a dedicated Nursing Professional Development Specialist to our team and enhance patient and family health education within our health system. This role is pivotal in supporting healthcare professionals by providing comprehensive education and resources to ensure high-quality patient care.

SPECIAL FOCUS: A Patient & Family Health Education Nursing Professional Development Specialist (PFHE NPDS) plays an ever-increasing role within systems and communities. A PFHE NPDS guides and promotes evidence-based healthcare in a patient- and family-centric manner to improve quality outcomes and equity within healthcare organizations and communities. A PFHE NPDS also acts to reduce unnecessary healthcare services, avoidable expenses, and health disparities attributable to limited health literacy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver educational programs for healthcare staff on patient education, health literacy, and best practices, including the teach-back method.

  • Provide at-the-elbow support to caregivers, meeting them in their practice areas to assess needs and deliver tailored education.

  • Advocate for and assist caregivers in utilizing vended content and creating or reviewing custom educational materials as needed.

  • Ensure caregivers have the necessary resources for effective patient education.

  • Utilize basic technology skills with Microsoft Teams, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, and demonstrate a willingness to advance these skills.

  • Stay current with new technologies and innovative methods to support healthcare professionals in patient education.

  • Applicants for this position should be prepared to travel between all campuses and community sites.

  • Contributes to education for staff and inter-professional teams, support for role transition and professional development, and evidence-based quality nursing practice, and supports ChristianaCare strategic goals.

Required Education and Experience:

  • BSN required, MS/MSN preferred or current enrollment in MS/MSN program with completion within three years.

  • Specialty certification.

  • Interprofessional experience to include direct involvement in performance improvement, regulatory compliance, and the development, delivery and evaluation of quality educational programming in a healthcare system.

Preferred skills:

  • Proficiency in an electronic health record, Microsoft Teams, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, with a willingness to learn and advance these skills.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to think systematically and provide well-rounded support across various practice areas.

  • Commitment to continuous learning and innovation in patient education and health literacy.

  • Experience in nursing education or professional development.
